Sounds good

Ol' Chumbucket reporting

Wow! That was fun! Cap'n Slappy and I got together with Long Steph Long, the musical director of the Festering Boil, to rehearse the medley "Drunken Sailor/Cap'n Slappy Rap." It was, if I do say so myself, terrific. Assuming we remember the words (always questionable, but maybe) it ought to be a big hit when we give it it's world premiere at Ship Ashore down on the southern Oregon Coast Saturday night.

Thanks to Long Steph for her advice, help and encouragement. See you all in Brookings!

Getting ready for the weekend

One of the great things about being a Pirate Guy is that you probably already have your Halloween costume ready to go. No last minute decisions for you!

For this Halloween weekend Cap'n Slappy and I will be on the road. We'll be performing at the Ship Ashore in Smith River, California, just over the border from Brookings, Oregon. The doors for this pirate-themed Halloween party open at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30. We'll be on at about 9:30 doing our typical schtick, teaching those in attendance how to talk like a pirate, walk like a pirate, and a lot of other stuff you probably don't need to know! We'll also be presenting the world premier of the "Cap'n Slappy Rap," which we're very excited about.

The night also features a D.J., dancing, karaoke, and a performance by the Renegade Line Dancers (don't worry, Slappy and I will NOT be dancing! You don't want to see that.) There'll be a prize for best pirate costume and for best all-around costume. Tickets are $7 at the door.

It's kind of a remote place, even if you live in Oregon, but it should be well worth the trouble.

Another new holiday?

Oct. 26, 2004
Ol' Chumbucket reporting.

I almost forgot to mention this from back in Sept. when I saw Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson do a reading from "Peter and the Starcatchers." The cast of characters includes dolphins, and these dolphins can speak. Not English, of course, that would be silly. The girl has to speak dolphin to converse with them. And Ridley Pearson read that part and I'm here to tell you, he can do dolphin better than anyone I've ever heard. It's really amazing. He sounds exactly like one.

Which suggests he may want to start a new holiday, except he'd be the only one who could do it: International Talk Like a Porpoise Day.

Good time

Ship's log, Oct. 24
Ol' Chumbucket reporting.

Our pardons for not being in touch for a while. We've been as busy as a peg-legged pirate at a butt-kicking festival, but we hope soon to have somethin' to show fer it.

In the meantime, we've continued to make appearances, and Saturday was a fine one. We threw in with a group of pirate enthusiasts who were hosting a fundraiser at Portland's classic movie house, the Hollywood Theater, for Families for Effective Treatment of Austism. Cap'n Slappy and I served as emcees for the event. A portland pirate band, Spinnaker, played a set, and there was a raffle. The main part of the event was a screening of "Pirates of the Caribbean." I'd guess the house was about 300, and we raised a fair amount of booty for FEAT. The gross take was abvout $5,000, and I'm sure the money will be well used.

We've got another raid ... er, appearance, coming up in Brookings Oregon down on Orgon's south coast at the end of the week. More on that to follow
